@ facono,UTICA ?

UTICA - Ethel G. Smith, 100, of Utica, died Thursday at Sunnyside Care Center, East Syracuse.
Ethel was born on her grandfather John Dirk's farm in Phillips, Wisconsin on March 7, 1908, and lived in Phillips, Brooklyn and Saugerties. She graduated from Albany State Teachers College in 1930, taught high school biology and earth science and was the school librarian in Millerton, N.Y., until she married Fred L. Smith on July 1, 1934.
They moved to Utica in 1940. She was a devoted wife and mother, a great cook, a knitter of mittens and afghans and shared her love and knowledge of the out-of-doors with her four children. Ethel was admired for her routine of daily walks year around until the end of her life. She was knowledgeable about plants and birds and fascinated with facts about constellations and planets. She was a Girl Scout troop leader and an active member of Central Methodist Church in Utica and Trinity United Methodist Church in Whitesboro where she displayed a talent for designing banners for church celebrations. She was an avid gardener and took great pleasure in painting, her true passion. To her great delight, her daughter, Susan, became a recognized landscape artist in New England.
She will be greatly missed and lives on in the memory of her sons, Roger F. (and wife Gay) of Lake George, Carl D. (and wife Mary Paula) of Fayetteville, and daughter Margaret Smith Parry of Tallahassee, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death on July 2, 1971 by her husband, Fred L. Smith, owner of Fred Smith's Shoes in Utica, on Oct. 11, 2002 by her beloved daughter, Susan Smith DeMichele and on March 14, 2008 by her great-grandson, Nathan Zachary Smith.
A Memorial Service will be held at a future date at Trinity United Methodist Church, 8595 Westmoreland Road, Whitesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.
